3 critical things to check when buying land for farming/gardening/growing food

I didn't know what I was doing when I bought my 6.74 acres in 2023... and got extremely lucky. Here's what I would check if I was buying land to grow my food out of again.

I’ve always liked taking risks, which is why I took a big one when I bought undeveloped farmland in 2023. I didn’t know what to check, test, or review before putting in an offer on the 6.74 acres of land that would soon become mine. I focused on the financial side, like finding a loan through Farm Credit East (I had no idea they existed prior to my land transaction), as well as safety.

I did not check the actual integrity of land I would be growing all sorts of things out of in the future. Though, in my defense, I had no idea what I was going to be doing with the land… period. I just knew I wanted to save and protect pollinators, which has still held true to today.

Therefore, if you are eyeing half an acre, 10 acres, or even hundreds of acres for self-sufficiency, starting a business, farming, homesteading, etc., I am going to share 3 things I highly recommend you check before you invest all of your money into your own little slice of gardening paradise.

Let’s get to it!
