Don't have cash to buy land? Here are 3 ways to finance your farming dream
With over $24 trillion in farmland assets up for sale over the next 20-years, there has never been a better time for you to buy rural land
According to the 2025 Farmer’s Almanac, over $24 trillion in farmland assets are going to be for sale over the next 20-years. With the average American farmer being over the age of 60, they are tired, thinking about retiring, and looking for a way ‘out’ to rest their weary bones.
I’ve spoken with a lot of these farmers. My farm is located in a New York State agricultural zone, which means most of my neighbors farm in some capacity. These individuals don’t want to sell out to big corporations, Wall Street, or foreign companies. But in many cases, they have no choice.
Some of these farmers don’t have kids to pass the farms onto in a trust. Others have kids who are not interested in taking on the work of managing a farm. And still others are looking for a way to pay their bills (and debts). If a company shows up with a check, it’s hard for them to say no.
The stats don’t lie - the farmland is there, it’s for sale, and the volume of farmland that’s about to be up for sale over the next two-decades is alarming IF it gets into the wrong hands.
I fully believe we are at the beginning of a land revolution, and it is MUCH better for the environment, animals, and the human race if this farmland finds its way into the hands of everyday people. Whether you want to farm the land, start a business, run a homestead, or hobby farm for some physical activity and cleaner food, rural land satisfies all of these dreams and more (and you don’t need hundreds of acres either - just one or two will do).
I set out on a mission to buy undeveloped land in 2023. What I have learned since then has blown my mind. I have made it my mission to acquire as much information as possible and share it with you all.
Without further ado, let’s look at three legitimate ways to finance rural American land.
