Here's what the green metal roof on my barn build cost me
The Amish installed a hunter green metal roof on top of my barndominium build in 2024... in just one day. Here's what it cost, as well as the companies they used to get it done.
Earlier in 2024 when I sat down with the Amish to select the materials I wanted for my barn center/barndominium, we were in instant agreement to go ahead with metal roofing. I had elected to have metal roofing put on my Florida home a few years prior, which held up amazingly against 200mph wind gusts during Hurricane Ian (the inside of the house didn’t make out as lucky with four-feet of storm surge).
I’ve always liked the sleek appearance of metal roofing, and find it to be superior to shingles that mold, tear, decompose, or fall off the structure. The Amish in Upstate NY pretty much solely use metal roofing on their homes and barns as well - and if it’s good enough for the smartest builders I have ever known - then it is good enough for me!
Since the Amish have a penchant for design and aesthetics, we agreed the roof needed to be a more interesting color than a boring neutral. After visiting their homes this time last year, one of the brothers had a hunter green roof on his barn… and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Not only is green my favorite color, but it’s also part of my farm business name: House of Green. Selecting a hunter green metal roof just made sense for this project, which is why I am going to break down the cost of having a roof of this size put on a barndominium, as well as disclose where the metal roofing came from (an Amish business).
(The structure is 2,600-square-feet in size, plus the 12 x 12 entryway that adds an additional 144-square-feet to the roofing)
Let’s get started!
