Thousands of Americans will make an exodus out of modern society this year in pursuit of a calmer, healthier, and simpler life. It’s estimated around 800,000 Americans leave cities every year, on average, to move out into rural settings. I would argue that number is increasing drastically as I meet folks that have sprawled out of New York City up into Upstate New York counties weekly at my farm stand.

Whether it’s unaffordable rent, our chemical-covered food, or a desire to own your own piece of land that you steward or raise a family on, you are not alone on your quest to set up a homestead.

With setting up a homestead comes navigating town board personalities and local regulations. No two towns are the same in our country. In fact, no two towns, in the same county, in the same state, are the same. The variation from town to town in my county, Saratoga County, New York, is astounding.

This may sound like a lot of work to you - but I would challenge you to see it as a fun ‘shopping’ opportunity. You are going to need to shop towns to find the right one for your homestead/farm property.
