When I spontaneously bought 6.74 acres of rural undeveloped land with a loan last year, I never imagined my life would look like this at the end of 2024.
Love how you are divinely inspired and keep 'listening', moving forward and following your path. Clearly you are resourceful and smart too which is part of your success but your adventures and insights are exciting. Thanks for sharing!
The great professor of mythology and classics, Joseph Campbell, used to say, “The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with Nature.”
I acquired my family land in Slovakia in August. Like you, I have no experience at all, just willingness to start and see where my journey will take me.
Hi, Adri. Slovakia? Am on more-or-less the same journey trajectory. And getting contacts nearby Slovakia, I don't know why. Can share. In Japan now. Paying close attention to Alex. Get your newsletter going, you have 1 subscriber already, lol.
We already have a property west of Osaka, lawn, trees in backyard, way more space than most folks, and self-built/self-contracted. But want to go rural. Aim is the northern island, Hokkaido, with a more Russian geography and climate, to more than one place. Great ocean salmon fishing near Sakhalin, deer everywhere, plenty of horse ranches southern part. Winters aren’t truly cold, not 40 below cold. And Europe, too. Somewhere with Tyrol culture, like the corner where Austria, Slovenia, Italy meet. Klagenfurt. Something like that. Last there 50 years ago. Huge forests.
Tyrol area is gorgeous. Been around many times, but winters do get cold. Hope you find your spot in the area, cannot go wrong. Sometimes i take a train from Zurich to Vienna ,most gorgeous scenery, especially in winter.
Alexandra, I have been following you on substack since I first saw one of your posts. When you mentioned your land is in Schuylerville I realized how close to me (Colonie) you are. I am a "front yard gardener". 5 raised beds and two in the ground as well as NO PESTICIDES for over 15 years has made my soil relatively fertile. My lawn is now so lush in the middle of summer my neighbors ask what I am doing. (No pesticides, milky spore three times per year to kill/control grubs). MY father was raised on a 400 acre blueberry farm in Southern MASS and has been teaching farming at 4H classes for years. They take inner city kids and bring them to their farm(s). My father says the connection a kid has when he figures out how to "get along" with nature is amazing and leads to smiles, hugs, and good food down the road.
You are truly sheparding your land, which is how it was meant to be from time immorium. kudos
I have worked a myriad of jobs throughout my life but has always been my happiest when I was working outside and in the soil. I have a friend who has helped me with the computer work for a book I wrote. I am computer illiterate.
When he told me that I had to do something I usually muddled my way through. I always told him I would be happier moving a pile of dirt six feet over with a shovel then doing what I needed to do on the computer. He would just laugh, : - ) .
Most people think it is menial or beneath them to work the soil but that is because they have never done it and definitely have never tasted what they grew. It is better then yoga, meditation or any drug. It takes you on a journey of self that you can not get any other way.
I tell people to enjoy the Journey, you are finding that out. No amount of money can fulfill you as that can
The book I wrote is called Grow What You Eat by Roland Eagle it is in Amazon, paper and e-book. Take Care
I love that you mentioned God, not many do these days, and you absolutely should be proud of your accomplishments. I plan on doing the exact same thing as you. I'm just not sure where to go yet as I currently live in Queens. But I get the feeling that 2025 will not be a good year and we are inching closer to what looks like the start of another horrible world War. As Jesus says "Flee to the mountains". Upstate is close to me but I'm not sure about the laws. Anyway, thank you for your post. Maybe I will shop at your farm one day and look around. It's encouraging. I wish you nothing but Love Health and Safety 🙏
Very inspiring and I agree with you 100 percent. Regenerative farming is the way to go, as well as connecting with nature. I have learned that God is the very best gardener, so learn from him. I am seeking God’s Will for the 30 acres we have in East Texas.
Many of the same things I tell my visitors to the Butterfly House. We know so very little about nature. Recently we had a group of Mormon missionaries visit the Butterfly House. after about 30 minutes, and having their photo taken inside with the butterflies, one of the girls said "I think this is what Heaven is like".
You are living my dream. I to want a spread where I can have some cows, pigs, and dogs. I want to have a big greenhouse where I can grow mushrooms and breath clean virgin air.
This is a dream I'm holding into. Not sure yet when God will open the door, but I'm poised to jump through with gusto when it is presented! God bless your journey, and thank you for sharing and encouraging ❤️🙏
I hit the "like" button. Where's the damn "love" button! Super summary of your journey so far. Thank you for taking us along with you!
Aw I am glad you are enjoying it!

It’s impossible for me to tell my story without mentioning God! Agreed not many others do

I really believe that is what Heaven is like

Making up scenarios in your head that cause anxiety… so relatable I laughed out loud 😂 let’s besties.
