We don't have Amish out here but it would be great to be or at least give that kind of community love and kindness in our own. Thank you for sharing this. Praying everything goes well for you this Thanksgiving and Christmas

Thank you so much! I am hoping my documentation of the Amish inspires non-Amish to start living communally like they do!

Have always admired the Amish- hardworking, meticulous and supportive people we should all aspire to emulate. Also, I always hire local people and pay cash, as it benefits the worker by not paying credit card fees, and myself because I don't worry about people using my credit information. It also allows for privacy, which is important to me. So many people are worried about CBDC and government control of their financial lives... well, the best way to thwart that is using cash

Thank you for sharing. Your story reminds me about the same feelings I'd experience back when I happened to interact with Amish. I occasionally delivered building materials when I was over the road truck driver. They truly radiate positive energy. That feeling of community we lack so much in our modern live. I wish I could live among Amish some day.

This was a great read and I was engaged the entire time, a rarity on Substack for me. Thanks for giving me what I didn't know I needed today.

My best friend was raised Amish. She was excommunicated when she left as a young adult, but has since mended things with her family. She no longer lives as an Amish, but she has a deep love for her people. One of the topics that she struggles with the most is the lack of community support among Christians & the English (what Amish call those of us who are not Amish). I've learned so much from her about community and how important it is. They truly get it. We need to learn it!!

Once upon a time this was common knowledge. You can even see "barn raisings" in old films as part of the plot. It's even in a once popular Broadway musical and film called "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." Our country's culture once upon a time. They were pioneers but people who helped one another. My grandmother had a farm, mostly grapes made into raisins in centralCalifornia. Every grape harvest our neighbors in the suburbs got loads of grapes shared. Today my neighbors get my lemons, persimmons, kumquats, oranges, tangerines, watch. A good way of life people should not lose

I actually just sort of wrote a Note about this! That it used to be normal to raise barns as a community. Crazy!!!

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story. I am glad the truth is being shown rather than the muck that is on TV. Bless you.

I am very impressed by your account of your Amish neighbours; in Ontario here we have Mennonites who help us keep things real. We get amazing maple syrup from a guy at the side of the road; he parks his buggy and lets his horse munch grass while we put our money down

I love that!

Part of the reason that they only take cash is because they don’t have Social Security numbers, which is required for many bank accounts and credit card-taking companies.

True, but it's a smart reminder to all of us that we can better support our neighbors by paying them in cash and not card!

I visited an Amish community near Pittsfield a couple of years ago and it reminded me of the way the early Mormon settlers started following the Law of Consecration. It’s a tough life to lead and can sometimes breed envy. But it takes great dedication and perseverance to bring a community together like that. I was so proud of and honored to have met them. It’s a beautiful lifestyle that I hope to entwine myself with very shortly! I thank you for your posts. It’s helping me get to where I can have my own property also very soon! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻🙏🏻💗
